Tuesday up early to load the car, and get moving before the heat of the hottest day of the year so far.
We set off about 06:20 and headed S down the a46, m40, a34 to the edge of winchester.
Stopped at sutton scotney services for coffee and cake in a delightfully air conditioned costa.
Headed E through the forested area to avoid the heat, passing through midhurst and petworth, both looking interesting for a wander around, but not in this heat, as we eventually saw 36 degrees outside the car.
Arrived at the rose cottage inn b+b about 11:00.

We popped out for lunch at the barley mow.

Afternoon much too hot in the tiny room, hearing the clip clop of horses in the lane.
Evening there was a sudden change, as a dusty wind arrived, dropping the temprature significantly.
We went down to have a look at seaford, including a walk along the beach, and a bit of shopping at morrisons.

And then there were 3.

Wednesday up early for a full english breakfast at 07:00.
Then a short drive down to newhaven dfds ferry terminal.
No queues, only passport checks, then a pleasant wait to board.

We were on the côte d'albatre.

We saw the twin boat going the other way.
A bit of lunch on the boat, the paper placemat showing suggestions for places to visit in seine maritime. Keep that for later.
Time to change cash over, and synchronise watch.
Again passport checks only.
So nice to be in france again, after so long.
A quick stop to fix the magnetic uk sign.
A short drive down small roads to the golf hotel near saint-saëns.
We arrived in rain and a thunderstorm, so parked up front to off load the bags, before parking properly.

Lovely cat in reception was not very friendly.

Then it started raining really heavily.
We had a large room on the 1st floor on the S corner.

The sunshine returned later.

Evening down the grand staircase for a meal in the restaurant.

We went for a wander around the grounds.
A strange round tower, that seems to be just used for storage.

We walked all the way down to the road.

Tadpoles in the lake.
A froglet at the edge of the road.

Thought we saw a ginger cat in the distance.
We heard and saw a bat outside, but went to bed before they really started.

And then there were 2, and it seems pretty clear who the 1 is going to be.

Jeudi and earth overshoot day.
23 years since we bought the house.

A bit damp and grey.
Le petit déjeuner.
The cat a little more friendly.

We checked out and headed down to have a look at saint-saëns, initially the carrefour market, which was disappointingly small, but we got some stuff for lunch.
Then into the main square, where a morning market was happening.
Found a blue parking space and had a coffee.
Had a look inside the church.

We went for a walk down la rue des tanneurs, a lovely clear stream with ducks, and large fish.

We headed S towards rouen, aiming to stay to the W of it.
Stopped to eat what we had bought for lunch at quincampoix.
A bit more shopping and a refuel an an intermarché super at montville.
We looked for somewhere to stay, and liked the look of la bonne famille at jumièges.
Headed over there, passing through duclair on the N bank of the seine.
Down into that loop.
When we arrived, we couldn't see it, or anywhere to park, and in a bit of a 1 way system.
We looped around again, and ended up behind it.
Pulled over and carol went on foot, and found it.
It seemed we need to park further down the road.
I went in and did the negotiations en français.
All a bit rushed, as they were trying to close up the café.
We took the bags to the room, then parked the car, and walked back.
Confused by the reservé signs at the car park, we left it in the large campervan area.
A small 1st floor room with the window almost directly opposite the N tower of the abbaye over the road.

We went out to find very limited options for food, but we managed at la petite flamme, taking the last table available.
Saw the petit déjeuner laid out on the tables ready for tomorrow.

Vendredi we locked up, dropped off the keys, moved the car up, put the bags in the car and did the abbaye de jumièges, as it opened at 09:30.

Enter through the gift shop.
Nice cat matching the gravel in the courtyard.

Some sort of art installation going on with sound.

And then there were 2.

We had a coffee and tea outside at l'heures des thés.

We wanted to continue W into the next loop, finding the free ferry across the seine, eventually realising that we needed to get in the queue.

On the other side we headed N through heurteauville.
Stopped at la mailleraye sur seine for lunch overlooking the seine at restaurant la presqu'ile.

Then down the d131 through the forêt de brotonne.
Continued SW to stop the night at the small town of pont audemer.
It started raining very heavily when we parked up in the centre of town, so we found somewhere fairly close.
The hotel le drakkar was a bit basic, and it was raining again when we arrived, but ok.
No kettle, but having paid for breakfast, we managed to get some eau chaude from the coffee machine.

Samedi a good breakfast in the sunshine.
We went into town and did some laundry.

Had a quick walk along the river risle and into town while it was doing.
Artwork including an enormous pair of wellies on the bank.

Had a quick look at the church.

Moved the car into the centre and selected palais de la biere for lunch.

We decided to head further S down the d130 to brionne, then on to beaumont le roger.
Passed under the elevated a28 along the way.

Also passed lots of houses with a row of plants along the roof ridgeline in this area, but didn't get any photos of that.
Apparently it is a thing in normandy.
Parked up in the centre of beamont le roger in front of the big church, and got out for a wander around, quickly spotting the low 10 mins only sign hiding behind the cars.

Moved the car to the official car park.
We walked back to have a look at the prieuré de la sainte trinité that we had seen on the way in.
Rather alarmed by the warning about vipères.
A meadow brown butterfly (or 2) up there.

We returned to where we 1st stopped and had coffee and tea.
Getting very hot now.
We continued S down the d23, stopping at la ferrière sur risle to look for somewhere to stay.
Decided on havre de paix at garennes sur eure some distance to the E.
A small studio apartment room in the roof, accessed by a fire escape type stair.
With the thickness of the roof insulation, this is clearly going to get too hot, but we had already booked it.
There were electric shutters over the velux windows, but it was not possible to have the window open at the same time as the shutter was closed.
Anyway, it was a lovely location on the W bank of the river eure, and it had a kitchen.

We saw a lizard around the side of the house, but it was too quick for a photo.
We popped down to the intermarché super at ivry la battaille for a bit of shopping.
Had soup and some vegetables, and started a bottle of pouilly fumé domaine les chaumes.

We went down to have a look at the river eure.
Quite fast flowing to the N, lots of greenery, slightly oily looking swirls.
Back up the stairs.

At dusk carol took the bat detector down to the water, picking up only a few bats.
A long day.

Dimanche we went down to have a sit by the water in the cool morning sunshine.

Étienne brought us a breakfast basket.

With 31 degrees forecast for the afternoon we didn't fancy being out in the car then, so asked to stay another night.
We sat enjoying the river garden for a while.

Back to the intermarché super for more supplies.
That feeling local that you get on a familiar road.
Bought some saucisses pour cassoulet, and our own breakfast stuff.
Round the front of the house.

There were a couple of "barrel" dwellings in the front garden that must have been extremely hot inside.
As expected it got uncomfortably hot, with the forecast being revised to 33 degrees.
We had the cassoulet and the rest of the wine.
At dusk we went down to the river again, seeing a white swan.

There were also more bats flying about the trees, rather than over the water.

Lundi sunshine at 1st, but grey later.
We decided to push further S and aimed for somewhere familar from 2019.
The sunshine returned as we went down the d928 to nogent le rotrou.
Found a blue parking space in rue villette gâte, and went looking for lunch in the main square place st pol.

Found la casa line's.

Possibly a little early to look for somewhere to stay, but we wanted to have a look round anyway.
Carol had spotted manoir michelet, and it was within walking distance.
Moved the car to a blue place in the main square.
Roadworks and a 1 way system meant it was tricky to get to by road.
We found and knocked on the door.
Presently the window opened, and I asked for a room.
We were allocated la légende du dragon, given the keys to fetch the car.
Managed to park right opposite the front door.

Such a beautiful place, a little like staying in an oxford college, only better.
It has a small garden, an octagonal tower, with a stone spiral staircase.

The breakfast room has a long wooden table and benches, again reminiscent of an oxford college hall.
Also full of objets d'art.

Interesting moth in the garden.

We went for a walk up the hill to have a look at the castle.

Also found the place we stayed in 2019.

Being a monday, the museum inside was closed, but we had a walk right around the castle.

A lovely very friendly dark brown cat on the steps down.

Evening finshed reading oranges are not the only fruit.

Mardi a lovely petit déjeuner in the big room.

Such an excellent place to stay.
Time to turn around and head N.
We aimed for the familiar from 2019 mortagne au perche.
Recognised some of the roads that we had zig zagged through in the rain in 2019.
Busy, we eventually found a blue parking space, more or less where we had stood in the rain, trying to decide which hotel to use.

We had a wander around and found the hotel du tribunal where we stayed in 2019.

Had a quick look inside the enormous church.

Lunch outside the café de france.
Again disappointing to have to listen to an english conversation.
We continued N, back to the seine area.
We had a brief stop at an intermarché hyper at bernay.
We selected chambres d'hôtes le saint aubin.
Passed an impressive looking leclerc at le neubourg.
We played with the collie in the garden in the late sunshine.

Mercredi breakfast with the host and some belgians, listening to the french.
Found out that the address rue des ormes is about elms which have largely disappeared.
They were heading for the local chateau, but we were keen to visit the leclerc.
Back to le neubourg, passing through iville.
Managed to buy some reasonably priced sancerre rené carroi and domaine steve millet.

We continued N back to the loops of the seine, initially aiming for bardouville.
Stopped for lunch at l'annevillais at anneville ambourville.
We crossed the seine at another slightly larger free ferry to duclair.
Slightly larger queue for a larger boat.

We headed W to do a bit more of the area before heading home.
Stayed at la bergerie.
We went for a walk down the lane, then had a drink in the garden, with 2 cats gradually getting more friendly.

Jeudi 2 more belgians at breakfast.
We did consider going to lillebonne to see the amphitheatre, but it didn't look that interesting.
Needing to be near dieppe at the end of the day, we decided to head N for the coast.
But 1st, we went for a refuel with relatively cheap french E10 at an intermarché hyper at yvetot.
Also some more supplies, especially volvic, being much cheaper than in uk.

We went to saint valery en caux, but when we got there, couldn't find anywhere to park, and we still seemed a long way from the sea.
So we continued E along the d925 coast road, passing lots of wind turbines.
Tried again at veules les rose, getting fairly close to the sea, but again heaving with tourists, and nowhere to park.
Getting a bit late for luch, we parked up at la chapelle sur dun and had lunch in the car.
Stopped for coffee at le bourg dun.
Continued E to the edge of dieppe.
Still a little early to look for a place to stay, we went for a drive down the d915 to torcy le petit, before heading N up the d149, the road we had come down all that time ago.
Spent some time looking at the various options, including a drive around the sea front, ending up at the brit hotel, which was a bit expensive, but nicely equipped, and very handy for the ferry.
We went out to eat at the nearby la boucherie.

Time to say au revoir to france.

This time we were on the other 7 sisters boat.
Again, at half way we saw the twin boat.

We walked over to the old mill for a late lunch, passing near robin hood's grave along the way.

On the way back, again passing the mysterious dumb steeple monument.

We got some goodies from the spar shop.
Back at the monastery we had a look round the vegetable garden.
There was a gate open to an orchard, but we were not sure we could go in there.

Friday morning breakfast was a bit basic.
Ordered my my samsung tab a8 64GB from currys for collection later.
Having read the room info, we went for a walk around the large grounds in lovely sunshine.
Large apples, plums, medlars in the orchard.

The grounds continue down the craggy hill, almost to the river calder.

We caught up with a cat, that probably usually has the grounds to itself.

We set off for shibden hall, aiming to get there when it opens at 10:00.

Enter through the kitchen, then the study.

Into the main room, which is not that big, but interesting.
We had a long chat wih the guide about fiction and fact in gentleman jack.

Out into the courtyard, and into the barn with the carriages.

Beyond for a quick look at the various workshop exhibitions.
Exit through the gift shop and cafe.
We walked down the hill to the cafe next to the lake for lunch

Back up the hill to the car for a short drive to have a look at halifax.
The town hall, cornmarket, victoria theatre.
The yorkshire stone looking similar to cotswold stone, but darker, maybe partly due to pollution.

We walked down through the westgate arcade, finding an actual record shop.
And discovered chantel mcgregor.

Entered the piece hall. Some sort of music stage set up at the W corner.

Had a look inside the library, where the adjacent square chapel spire has been nicely integrated.

On to the minster.
Shockingly dirty black on the outside. Dark on the inside too.

Back at the car, with still a few hours left, we decided to go home the pretty way, over snake pass.
A difficult, slow drive through rush hour traffic in huddersfield.
Briefly joined the woodhead pass at woodhead reservoir.
A quick stop overlooking glossop.

Stopped for something to eat at the yorkshire bridge inn, just after ladybower reservoir.
All of the reservoirs looking mostly empty.

Home about 20:15.
