Saturday up early and down the m40 through drizzle to oxford for the exeter college maths and physical sciences symposium.
Seems rather perverse to have it outdoors in a marquee in the back quad in january, but it was well heated.
The lack of a stage meant it was rather difficult to see the presentations.
Some 700 year stuff on sale.
1st a talk on big data and its implications for employment.
2nd was a waste of time.
3rd on poincaré's insight into how geometry links to algebra and its influence on modern maths.
Nice anecdote about the omnibus of coutances.
4th an interesting talk on the history and future of fusion power by someone who actually works on it.
Unfortunately it still seems to be at least 30 years away.
Interesting to hear about iter and demo.
We stopped for lunch in hall, but when we found out what it was we baled out and looked for an alternative, ending up in the market cafe.

Afternoon 5th a talk on imaging the movement of molecules inside a cell.
In particular the way motor proteins walk along microtubules using hydrolysis of atp into adp.
6th a look at the lhc and some of the theoretical physics by someone who works there, including a bit about dyck words.

We skipped the afternoon tea and did a bit of shopping before heading home.

Crossed a road to get some cash, and got trapped for a while, inside the circuit.
With not many options, we had lunch at pret a manger, coffee and cake at costa.
Eventually escaping the circuit between races we sought out all of the smaller venues.
Returned to find the rescue rooms and stealth, but where is the red room?
Eventually found the red room upstairs.
Returned to stealth to see stonefield, who had been doing a sound check when we popped in earlier.

Back to rock city for some of the midnight beast, something to eat outside, then wolf alice.

Left early in order to get to the red room in time for the wonderful hero fisher.

Sunday up early for 2x circuit on the fujin in the low sunshine 14 mins 26.
Caught up with the superbike race from iomtt.
Over to wolston to fly the simply in the perfect weather.
Caught a thermal straight away, gaining lots of height.
When I felt the wind freshen a little, I assumed it had blown through and headed up wind to (not) find another.
Pretty well perfect landing in the low wind.
A quick look at the time, and it must have been up for about 20 mins.
Straight back up again, and found the thermal again in the same place.
After a while a bird joined me in the same bit of sky, soon ascending out of sight.
Felt the wind freshen again, but stayed where I was.
Eventually getting too small and high, and the flies were getting to be a nuisance in the heat.
Descended fairly rapidly, doing lots of loops and a sort of roll on the way down.
Another pretty well perfect landing. Another 20 mins.

With nothing much else of interest on, we stayed by the bbc introducing stage for a while, watching a smiley balloon blown from the nme to the main stage at dusk.

Started getting a bit cold, but we stayed for an excellent set from band of skulls at festival republic.

We went for a walk up the hill and along high street, to the west gate, and down southgate street, finding st thomas church and the everyman cinema.

Back down high street.

Popped into the guild hall just as the fair was closing.
Back up to the cathedral at dusk.

We joined the queue to go round the back of the cathedral, finding crowded market stalls and an ice rink.

Stopped at the N oxford services for something to eat on the the way back.
